FOUS Girls Club Girls are bombarded with negative images and conflictive messages of themselves. This is depicted by various media venues. These images/messages have contributed to low self-esteem and poor self-image in girls. It is reflected in poor attitudes, risky behaviors and lack of values. To counteract this behavior FOUS created the the Girls Club. It is a 10 –week innovative (school-based) mentoring program targeted at-risk African-American girls ages 11 - 19. The program focuses on Healthy Attitudes, Values and Behaviors. The Club is currently being offered at the several Chicago Public Schools.
College Bound Program Series
Senior Workshop Series - There is a need for more intentional strategies to make higher education accessible to more populations of young people, particularly among low-income and minority youth. SWS is offered annually beginning in the month of October through April. The two-hour workshop geared for 1o-12th grade students will be offered once a month at a local library. The purpose of the workshop is to provide the necessary resources to youth aspiring to go to college. As a result, students will learn how to complete the admission process, identify various funding sources, and choose a school appropriate for them among other things.
The In-Touch Program - The national dropout rate for first year college students is significant. There are several reasons why this is t is true. The top three reasons are no finances, poor academics and lack of support. FOUS College Bound In-Touch Program is a service provided to first year college students. The purpose of this initiative is to provide support and a variety of resources to them. This will enable student to make a smooth transition while helping them become connected to a support system. Additionally, support will continue until student obtains college degree.
